Why ‘Men Hunted, Women Gathered’ Is Too Simple

Women demonstrably hunted in some past and present societies, but the evidence supports flexible, varied labor—not one reversed universal rule.

Short answer

“Men hunted, women gathered” is too simple because women demonstrably hunted, men also gathered, and subsistence work varied with ecology, technology, age, skill, childcare, and culture. A 9,000-year-old female burial at Wilamaya Patjxa is strongly associated with a used hunting toolkit. Ethnographic records also document women hunting in multiple societies. That does not prove equal participation everywhere: the frequency and importance of female hunting remain debated, and many recent foraging societies have gendered divisions of labor.

The familiar picture assigns jobs before finding evidence

A museum diorama can make prehistoric labor look settled: man with spear, woman with basket and child. The arrangement is plausible for some times and places. The problem begins when it becomes a timeless biological rule covering thousands of societies across hundreds of thousands of years.

“Hunter-gatherer” already bundles several economies into one label. People lived on coasts, grasslands, forests, deserts, and high plateaus. They used different prey, plants, seasons, mobility patterns, and technologies. A task that is efficient for one camp may be pointless in another.

The word “only” therefore causes most of the trouble. Evidence does not support a world in which women never hunted or men never collected plant foods. It also does not support simply swapping the labels and declaring every prehistoric workplace equal. Variation is the less dramatic and more defensible answer.

Preservation gives hunting an unfair spotlight

Stone survives. Baskets, nets, wooden digging sticks, slings, cordage, leather, and plants usually do not. A projectile point can remain recognizable for millennia while the container that carried most of a group’s calories disappears.

This preservation bias affects both what archaeologists find and what audiences remember. Large-game hunting creates an obvious story around a durable tool. Gathering requires botanical knowledge, timing, travel, processing, and sometimes detoxification, but much of that work leaves quieter traces.

Cooperative care was central to survival, yet it is harder to see in stone than a spear point. Childcare also did not necessarily confine one woman to camp: care could be shared among relatives, older children, and other group members.

Skeletons bring another uncertainty. Biological sex estimates based on bones can be difficult when remains are incomplete or traits overlap. Protein analysis from tooth enamel now offers an additional method in some cases, and it has prompted researchers to revisit earlier identifications.

Wilamaya Patjxa is strong, specific evidence

At Wilamaya Patjxa in the Peruvian Andes, archaeologists excavated a burial dated to roughly 9,000 years ago. A young adult lay with projectile points and tools associated with cutting and processing animals. Osteological evidence and proteins in tooth enamel identified the individual as female.

A grave is not a job application. Objects can be gifts, symbols, heirlooms, or offerings from other people. The useful question is whether the whole context makes one interpretation more likely than its alternatives.

Here, the assemblage was coherent rather than a single decorative point. A male individual buried at the site also had projectile points. A later Scientific Reports study examined microscopic wear and found traces consistent with the points functioning as projectiles and knives. The authors concluded that both individuals were likely large-mammal hunters, while acknowledging that an elaborate offering explanation cannot be eliminated absolutely.

This supports a narrow but important claim: at least one woman in this early Andean community was very probably equipped as a hunter. It does not show that every woman hunted, that women and men contributed equally, or that the pattern applied throughout prehistory.

Ethnography confirms possibility, not one universal frequency

Accounts of recent and living foraging societies provide evidence that women hunt in multiple cultures. They must be used carefully. Present communities are not fossils, and colonial disruption, markets, local ecology, and each society’s history matter.

A widely reported 2023 PLOS ONE review searched ethnographic writing on 63 foraging societies and found some documentation of women hunting in 50. Many coded cases were intentional rather than chance encounters. The paper describes varied tools and arrangements, including Agta women using knives, bows, dogs, partners, or combinations of them, and women in some societies hunting with children present.

That study is useful against the absolute claim that women do not hunt. Its famous 79 percent should not be read as “women performed 79 percent of hunting” or “79 percent of women were regular hunters.” It records whether the researchers found a case within each included society, not frequency, calories, effort, or the proportion of participants.

A 2024 response by a group of hunter-gatherer researchers went further. After rechecking source material, they reported selection bias and coding errors and argued that the paper overstated what its sample could establish. Their conclusion keeps both facts in view: female hunting is real, while men hunt more often in many well-studied recent foraging populations and gendered divisions of labor are widespread.

Responsible interpretation does not need to choose between “women never hunted” and “sex never shaped work.” Both are larger claims than the evidence earns.

Physical averages do not assign every task

Average differences in body size and upper-body strength can influence the costs of particular activities. They do not create a simple on-off switch for hunting.

Hunting can involve tracking, endurance, stealth, traps, nets, dogs, projectiles, group coordination, knowledge of animals, or carrying a kill. Different methods reward different combinations of strength, skill, and time. Pregnancy, nursing, injury, age, and childcare can change the practical choices available to an individual without imposing a lifetime rule on everyone of the same sex.

The category “hunting” also conceals differences between pursuing a large mobile animal for days, checking traps, net hunting, collecting small animals, fishing, and joining a communal drive. Asking whether women could hunt has an easy answer: they did. Asking how often, what, with whom, and at what cost needs evidence from a particular place.

A portfolio kept people alive

The second image is a better model than two permanent name badges. A group may fish, gather berries and roots, trap small animals, collect shellfish, process hides, make containers, care for children, and sometimes secure a large package of meat.

Hunting can yield a major windfall and also fail. Plant foods and smaller resources may provide steadier returns depending on the environment. Tools require making and repair; food needs transport, preparation, sharing, and storage. A group’s survival depends on the portfolio, not the cinematic value of one task.

Even rain can reorganize work. The account of what ancient humans did during long wet periods shows how shelter, fuel, maintenance, stored food, and social coordination could matter more than a single dramatic hunt.

This is why a reversed diorama would still mislead. Some groups probably divided work strongly by sex. Others used age, ability, season, technology, opportunity, or individual knowledge differently. Arrangements could change when people moved, prey shifted, somebody was pregnant, or a skilled person was injured.

Prehistory cannot provide a simple natural law for modern employment or family life. It provides evidence of humans solving local problems through flexible cooperation—and of archaeologists improving the story when an old label no longer fits what they find.
